How Not to be Boreout at Work?

  • Post comments:0 Comments

We are all familiar with being burnt out at work. What about being boreout at work? What is that? As the name suggests, being boreout at work means you are feeling chronically bored at work. You find no purpose or meaning in the work you do. Being boreout can have damaging effects on our mental health. In fact, an employee was paid $40,000 in damages because he was not given any interesting tasks at work.

More employees feeling boreout at work

A survey in 2017 found that that 70 percent of professionals in Singapore are bored with their work. Four out of ten employees in five countries said they will leave their current roles in the next three to six months. Based on the report by McKinsey, about 36 percent are quitting even without any job alternatives in hand. Employers may be concerned to read this. How many interesting and challenging tasks can you give all of your employees? For employees, the continuous advent of artificial intelligence may render most boring jobs out of relevance in the near future. With all these uncertainties, how can we challenge the feeling of boreout at the workplace?

How to add purpose to your life

The key reason for boreout is not just the lack of challenge at work. Boreout is really about our not finding what we do meaningful. We all search for a meaning or a purpose in our lives. We may even expect our jobs to give us meaning. Finding meaning or a purpose in our activities can be futile, although not impossible. Perhaps it may be a better idea to add meaning instead of searching for meaning in life.

Finding an inner purpose

Tasks done in a repetitive manner without any awareness are boring. However, if we are aware of how we are doing our work, it can be different. To be aware of how we are doing our daily tasks is to become aware of our emotions. A way of adding purpose or meaning to our lives is to learn to evolve our emotions.

Evolution of emotions

The purpose to transform our negative emotions into positive ones is to embark on the evolution of emotions. To do this, you must be able to ground your mind in the present moment to understand the emotions you experience. Mindfulness requires curiosity for you to look within yourself.
